Even if you feel well enough to leave the scene, hidden injuries may continue developing over the following hours or days.

Prompt medical evaluation is important after any significant collision, since delayed treatment can increase the risk of severe complications and may also affect a future personal injury claim.

Persistent abdominal pain or swelling may indicate damage to organs or internal bleeding. Pain that seems severe despite little or no visible bruising also deserves immediate medical attention.

Other symptoms include dizziness, lightheadedness, weakness or unusually low blood pressure. Feeling unusually cold, developing nausea or vomiting or experiencing increasing body swelling after a collision may also suggest internal bleeding or damage to vital organs.

Severe headaches following a car accident may signal a brain injury or internal bleeding inside the skull. Difficulty breathing could indicate broken ribs, a punctured lung or chest trauma. These conditions can become life-threatening if treatment is delayed.

Why immediate medical care matters

Internal injuries often require imaging tests because they cannot always be identified during a routine physical examination. Conditions such as organ damage, ruptured blood vessels or internal bleeding may continue worsening without obvious external signs.

Early diagnosis allows medical providers to begin treatment before complications become more serious. Timely care may also reduce the risk of permanent disability and improve recovery after a significant collision.

Medical records created soon after the accident may also help document the relationship between the crash and your injuries. This documentation is often important when pursuing a personal injury claim arising from a car accident.

If you experience concerning symptoms after a motor vehicle accident, obtain immediate medical care. If another person's negligence caused the collision, seeking legal guidance may also help you understand your rights and potential options for recovering compensation.

Many Californians may not even know that the amount of coverage these companies are required to carry was lowered significantly at the beginning of the year.

Last fall, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law that lowered some mandatory insurance limits for rideshare companies. Specifically, the minimum uninsured/underinsured (UM/UIM) coverage for their drivers went from $1 million to just $60,000 for each individual passenger and $300,000 per accident when multiple people are injured.

The new law has been touted as a way to lower rideshare fares. The state lawmaker behind the legislation noted that it was necessary to make these services affordable for more people. The high cost of buying, maintaining and insuring a car in California (not to mention keeping gas in it) leaves a lot of people reliant on rideshare apps to commute to and from school or work and to make other necessary trips.

Was the previously required coverage too high?

Advocates for the lower insurance coverage also argued that the $1 million requirement was too high and hadn’t been changed in California since it was implemented when ridesharing began. The leading rideshare companies said that it made fares in California unnecessarily high. According to Lyft, fares in California were double the average fare nationwide.

Regardless of the insurance coverage provided by rideshare companies, it can be confusing and complex for passengers to get the compensation they’re due after a rideshare crash. Local authorities have observed that e-bike crashes have increased substantially in the last few years, with no signs of the trend reversing. These crashes can injure people and cause serious property damage. Everyone involved may have questions about their rights, as those who operate e-bikes but do not have larger vehicles may not have liability insurance.

E-bike riders, drivers of larger vehicles and even pedestrians can end up involved in e-bike collisions. Who is liable for the cost generated by an e-bike crash?

Fault determines financial liability

People may assume that the person driving a larger vehicle is liable for e-bike crashes, but that isn’t always true. In some cases, e-bike riders may be directly responsible for collisions.

Many municipalities do not allow e-bikes on sidewalks, including downtown Burbank. The law also requires that e-bike riders follow all traffic laws and signs. If a person operates an e-bike on trails or sidewalks where they should not, they may be liable for knocking down pedestrians and causing their injuries.

In cases where e-bike riders get hurt by others, they may have the option of holding unsafe drivers responsible. Especially when they share the road with larger vehicles, e-bikes are vulnerable to severe damage. Riders can sustain catastrophic injuries, and their losses may exceed what the driver at fault can pay with their insurance.

Reporting an e-bike crash and then reviewing collision details with a bicycle collision attorney can be helpful. Insurance claims and personal injury litigation are both potentially viable solutions for covering the costs of an e-bike collision.

From an evolutionary standpoint, adrenaline can be helpful because it may allow a person to survive a dangerous situation. Someone who is injured far from help, for example, may benefit from the temporary rush of adrenaline that masks pain and helps them continue moving until they can reach safety.

But after a modern car accident, adrenaline can sometimes work against you. Because it masks pain, you may believe you have not suffered serious injuries and fail to seek the medical attention you actually need.

The development of injury symptoms

What often happens is that people think they are fine immediately after the crash. They may speak with EMTs and decline transportation to the hospital because they believe they luckily escaped the accident without injuries.

In the hours or days that follow, however, symptoms may begin to appear. As the adrenaline wears off, pain and other medical issues become much more noticeable.

In some situations, this can be very dangerous. Someone suffering from a traumatic brain injury or internal bleeding, for instance, can benefit greatly from immediate medical treatment. Delays in care may allow the condition to get significantly worse.

Seeking medical help and compensation

For these reasons, it is often wise to seek medical attention after a car accident, even if you initially feel fine. Medical treatment can be expensive, however, which is why it is important to understand how to seek financial compensation from the driver who caused the crash.

These can be very helpful for your case moving forward, as you report the accident to the authorities, file an insurance claim and potentially seek financial compensation from the other driver.

One of the main benefits of taking photos is that you will often have to move your car as soon as possible to clear the street. Taking pictures of the crash scene and the position of the vehicles can help demonstrate how the accident initially occurred. It may also be helpful to take a short video that can add perspective.

Documenting direct damages

Photos can also be used to document damage to your vehicle and injuries you may have suffered. If you sue the other driver for compensation, this helps prove that your injuries really did come from the car accident in question, and that you were not injured beforehand.

Demonstrating fault

Photos of the vehicles can also be helpful when you are demonstrating that the other party was at fault and caused a mistake that led to your accident. Along with the vehicles, try to get pictures of important details, such as stop signs, stoplights, intersections, painted lines on the street and much more.

Exchanging information

Finally, photos are an easy and quick way for you and the other driver to exchange contact information. You can take a picture of their insurance paperwork, their driver’s license and their license plate.

Naturally, taking all these photos is just one of the first steps you will take in your accident case. It can help to work with an experienced attorney as you pursue appropriate financial compensation.

Motorcycles are subject to the same traffic laws as four-wheeled vehicles, with a few noteworthy exceptions. Riders generally need to adhere to the speed limit, monitor traffic consistently and communicate with others to ensure their safety.

Frequently, motorcycle riders head out with at least one friend for socialization and safety enhancement. Another rider can limit the risk of a crash that leaves a motorcycle operator hurt in a hit-and-run. Riding together can enhance the overall safety of the trip, as well as the riders’ enjoyment. However, riding in front of each other also limits opportunities for communication.

When two people ride together on California roads, can the motorcycles ride two abreast in the same lane of traffic?

The law does not prohibit lane sharing

There is nothing in California state statutes currently prohibiting motorcycles from riding side by side in the single lane of traffic. In fact, motorcycles can even share a lane of traffic with larger vehicles through legal lane splitting if they encounter slow-moving traffic or a traffic jam.

Riding side by side enhances visibility, which may diminish the likelihood of a crash. Provided that riders can safely travel next to one another, doing so is lawful and should not result in a citation. Unfortunately, even when motorcycle riders do everything right, they are vulnerable to crashes caused by drivers. They may then need help paying their medical bills and covering the costs of motorcycle repairs.

Motorcycle riders hurt in motorcycle collisions caused by larger vehicles may have grounds for a personal injury lawsuit or an insurance claim. Reviewing the details of a particular crash with a legal professional could help injured riders to effectively understand their rights and options.

These offenses aren’t just things like people driving for miles with their turn signal on or blasting a particularly obnoxious podcaster with the windows down.

They’re also potentially dangerous things for drivers and others on the road around them. The following are two of the most common.

Cellphone use

It’s been years since California prohibited the use of hand-held devices while driving. Despite the fines and other consequences (especially for repeated offenses), too many drivers still do it.

Often, people think that if they’re in stop-and-go traffic that’s mostly stopped, in a drive-thru line or at a stop light, it’s OK. However, these are still considered “driving” under the law – and that distraction can still cause a collision.

Tailgating

No one wants another driver “on their tail” close behind them. It can feel like an aggressive move. Sometimes, drivers do it because they don’t want anyone to merge in ahead of them. They might think the driver ahead is moving too slowly and hope to get them to change lanes or speed up. That just may be how they drive.

Regardless of the reason, it’s dangerous. The best thing to do is get out of their way if possible. That means move into another lane if there is one and it’s safe. Until then, maintain your speed if it’s reasonable. Don’t speed up to get away from them.

Defensive driving isn’t always enough to prevent a crash

These are only two of the “annoying” behaviors that many LA drivers experience every day – whether in their neighborhood or on the freeway. Driving defensively often means not assuming that anyone else will do the right thing and being prepared for anything.

That can help lessen the chances of being involved in a serious crash, but it doesn’t guarantee it. If you’re involved in a crash caused at least in part by another driver, having experienced legal guidance can make all the difference in getting maximum compensation for medical bills and other expenses and damages.

Even safe drivers in well-equipped vehicles are at risk of injury if another driver fails to monitor their surroundings and hits them from behind. Rear-end crashes have a strong association with whiplash and other soft tissue injuries. They can also cause spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries and broken bones.

Drivers who are aware of the top causes of rear-end crashes, including the three issues below, can strengthen their position if they need to take legal action against another driver for causing a wreck.

1. Distracted driving

Rear-end crashes are frequently the consequence of drivers focusing on their phones or other sources of distraction, such as a meal, instead of on the road ahead.

2. Inadequate following distance

Many rear-end crashes occur specifically because drivers don't leave enough space between their vehicles and others in traffic. Motorists generally need to maintain at least a three-second following distance and may need to increase that space when they operate particularly large vehicles or when the roads are wet.

3. Aggressive driving

In some cases, the driver of the front vehicle might actually be at fault for a rear-end crash. In cases where motorists cut others off in traffic, possibly by turning or merging without leaving enough space, they can create scenarios in which rear-end collisions are all but unavoidable.

Especially in cases where injuries have led to lost wages, those involved in rear-end car crashes may need help holding another party accountable. Reviewing collision circumstances can help those involved in wrecks understand their rights and limit the long-term economic consequences of a collision.

They must attend specialty courses and are expected to adhere to a much stricter standard regarding their conduct on the road.

There are also many laws that apply to commercial vehicle operators, including semi-truck drivers, that do not apply to people driving their own vehicles. What rules are different for those in commercial vehicles?

1. Limits on drive time

While the law does not limit drive time for passenger vehicle operators, there are Hours of Service rules that apply to commercial drivers. They are subject to daily drive time limits, as well as weekly limits on how long they are on the road.

2. Strict alcohol rules

Anyone over the legal limit for their blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is at risk of arrest. Commercial drivers are held to a higher standard. A BAC of 0.04% is enough to warrant a drunk driving charge against a commercial vehicle operator. They can also lose their CDL for a drunk driving offense in their own vehicle.

3. The federal no-text rule

Distracted driving statutes differ from state to state. While most states have adopted no-text or hands-free laws, confusion as people move from one jurisdiction to another is common. Federal rules help prevent confusion by mandating that commercial drivers never manually handle a device while controlling a vehicle. They cannot type a text message or manually dial a phone without breaking a federal rule.

In cases where there is proof that a semi-truck operator violated traffic safety laws, their misconduct may strengthen the claims of the people affected by a crash. Reviewing the circumstances leading to a commercial truck collision with a skilled legal team can help injured people assert their rights effectively.

Higher speeds significantly increase the likelihood of severe or deadly injuries. Pedestrians struck on roads with high speed limits, such as rural roads, are at elevated risk of a poor outcome.

Pedestrians tend to be safer walking on roads and sidewalks in areas with lower speed limits. However, pedestrian crashes at lower speeds can still cause serious injuries. A somewhat new form of pedestrian crash associated with larger vehicles often occurs at low speeds but can result in devastating consequences.

Frontover collisions often involve children

When a driver fails to notice a pedestrian as they pull out of their garage, parking space or driveway, their vehicle speed is likely low. However, the pedestrian they strike could still sustain major injuries, especially if the pedestrian is a child.

Frontover collisions occur when a driver fails to notice a pedestrian approaching the vehicle from the front. Often, they may be in the blind spot at the outer edge of the windshield.

Children are at especially high risk of frontover collisions, as drivers can easily fail to notice them in traffic. They may then sustain fractures or other serious injuries. Drivers can minimize the risk of frontover collisions by carefully monitoring their surroundings, especially in parking lots and residential neighborhoods.

Those affected by front-over collisions and other pedestrian crashes may find that their total losses exceed the insurance coverage available. Working with an attorney to negotiate an insurance settlement or file a personal injury lawsuit may be necessary after a low-speed frontover collision.
