Tips for photographing a car crash scene

Getting into a car accident can be a stressful and disorienting experience. However, documenting the incident accurately and comprehensively can be crucial when filing an insurance claim or potentially pursuing a legal case.

Pictures are one of the most effective ways to document the accident scene. Start with wide shots that capture the scene of the accident, including the positioning of vehicles, any skid marks, the weather conditions and traffic signs or signals. Here’s what to photograph:

1. Vehicle damage

Take close-up photos of the damage to all vehicles involved from multiple angles. Capture the overall damage and specific dents, scratches or shattered glass. Don’t forget to photograph the interior if there’s any damage there. If any personal property was damaged in the accident, take pictures of these items.

2. License plates and identifying information

Photograph the license plates of all vehicles involved in the accident. This serves as a record of the cars present at the scene. If you can do so safely, take pictures of the other drivers’ insurance cards and driver’s licenses.

3. Traffic signs and road markings

Take pictures of the traffic signs, road markings and signals near the accident scene. These can help demonstrate the road conditions and establish the road rules at the accident location.

4. Environmental factors

Consider any environmental factors that may have contributed to the accident, such as a pothole, obscured signage, poor lighting or malfunctioning traffic light. Take pictures of these elements if they’re relevant.

These photographs can provide valuable evidence as you fight for compensation. You also need to consider the information in police reports and witness statements. Working with someone familiar with these cases can help you determine precisely what to do.
